How to Prep for a Garage Cleanout

A decade of clutter can be cleared in a single day if you attack it in the right order. Here's the exact playbook we use on cleanout jobs.

  1. 01

Block off the day (and the driveway).

One full day is realistic for most two-car garages. Move your cars out and park them on the street. You want the driveway clear as a staging area.

  2. 02

    Set up four zones outside.

Keep · Donate · Sell · Haul. Tape signs to four different spots on the driveway or lawn. Every single item that comes out of the garage goes into one of the four zones — no 'maybe' pile.

  3. 03

Empty the whole garage first, then sort.

Trying to sort while the garage is still full is why cleanouts fail. Pull everything out into the driveway first. It'll look worse before it looks better. Trust the process.

  4. 04

    Sort brutally.

If you haven't used it in two years and it's not sentimental or seasonal, it's not staying. Broken tools, expired chemicals, old paint, dried-out garden hoses — haul pile.

  5. 05

    Handle hazardous stuff separately.

Paint, motor oil, propane tanks, pesticides, and old batteries can't go with regular junk. Snohomish County has a Household Hazardous Waste drop-off — set those aside in a labeled bin.

  6. 06

Load donations first, then haul the rest.

Get the donation pile out of your driveway before it becomes furniture. Drop it off or schedule a pickup. Then handle the haul pile — either a truck run or a junk removal crew.

  7. 07

    Sweep, then re-stage.

Sweep the empty garage floor before anything goes back in. Then bring the Keep pile back in with real organization — shelves, hooks, labeled bins. You'll never do this again if you set it up right.

Quick-hit tips

  • Wear gloves and closed-toe shoes. Every cleanout finds a sharp thing.
  • Have contractor bags on hand — they're stronger than kitchen bags for real garage debris.
  • Take photos of anything you might sell before it hits the driveway. It's easier to list.
  • Give yourself a hard stop time. Momentum matters — don't let sorting drag past sunset.
